Sleep is the cousin to Death, do you remember such sayings? The syllables whispered through the air, slipping into the darkness between consciousness and total unawareness. It took a few moments before he began to register what the sounds meant, to shape them into words. But you, my dear Baron, what are you? You are not sleeping, but you are not quite dead.
A laugh.
The voice was a familiar one, an uncomfortably familiar one, too close. He slipped back into the comfort of nothingness, hearing quiet words tease at the edges of his mind but not registering them. How comforting this darkness was, without any worries or concerns. He did not need to think about… About… Who was it he should be thinking about? What was it he was supposed to be concerned about? …Who was he supposed to be?
It was like being splashed with cold water, the unpleasant sensation of everything suddenly coming back. He couldn't breathe, his mind telling his lungs to draw in quick breathes when they continued in their slow and steady inhalations; he couldn't speak, his mind telling his vocal cords to scream out in terrified awareness when they did not cease the calm speech he suddenly found himself giving.
Kneeling before the entire court, facing the veiled form of the Empress.
Why was he here? What was he saying?
In the back of his mind, he heard a pleased laugh (Marionettenspieler, he identified in growing horror), and a gently fond brush against his consciousness. A kiss to wake Sleeping Beauty.
